PACKAGE MONITORING FACILITY AT THE AUBE DISPOSAL CENTER (CSA)

Following a recommendation from the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN), Andra's Aube disposal center (CSA) has decided to set up a control unit dedicated to second-level monitoring of waste packages delivered to the site.

This project consists of the rehabilitation of an existing hall in the Waste Conditioning Workshop (ACD), which will be completely refurbished and extended to accommodate the processes related to the various controls that were previously outsourced by ANDRA.

  • to receive all types of waste packages stored on the site
  • to carry out all the non-destructive tests on the packages to be tested
  • to carry out inventories of “metal caissons” or core sampling of “immobilised waste packages

The project is carried out in the form of a complete project management including all the tasks from the preliminary design studies to the assistance to the acceptance operations of the installation. The “Nuclear Processes” and “Handling” work packages are under the responsibility of ATRIX. The specific safety missions (all analyses and preparation of safety reports submitted to the ASN) were also carried out by ATRIX.

Some points of detail :

  • design of the means of handling irradiating waste packages
  • design of special processing equipment: inventory of waste packages, coring of samples for expertise of immobilized waste packages, controls of tritium degassing measurements, controls of non-contamination and dose rate measurements, controls by gamma spectrometry, research and characterization of defects by visual imaging
  • integration of organizational and human factors in the design of equipment
  • safety analyses (all internal and external risks, nuclear and non-nuclear).
